Piano Lessons

I have over 25 years music teaching experience, both online via video link and in person from my music studio at home.

Piano and keyboard lessons are structured to fulfil individual requirements and developmental needs. I enjoy teaching both adults and children of all ages and encourage them to develop style, expression and interpretation to enhance musical performance.

As a registered tutor for the ABRSM and Trinity College of Music examination framework, any of my students can choose to take music examinations.

While music examinations can be a helpful measure of attainment, there is so much more to music than this. I aim to make your piano lessons both fun and entertaining and of course cover the theoretical side of music during our lessons together.

I encourage pupils to write their own musical compositions and songs and teach pupils how to write music and to structure it depending on genre.

Your first piano or keyboard lesson will be about finding out about your aims and goals and the types of music you enjoy. We will also discuss a dream list of pieces you would like to play. It will be my mission to help you achieve your ambitions of learning and playing your favourite music.

Following our first lesson I will put together a plan with you to provide a structured approach to learning and of course to fit in with your lifestyle and commitments.

Lessons are then arranged on a weekly basis and all students are given a regular set time slot of 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes or an hour.

All I ask is that you attend your music lessons regularly and practice between lessons to make the process more enjoyable and productive. You will also need a piano or electronic keyboard / piano at home. I can help you to choose an appropriate instrument and offer an instrument rental / purchase  scheme which we can discuss if required.

I have been learning to play the piano with John for a few months now. I have always wanted to learn to play and during lockdown I made the decision to start. I love learning with John. He is a great tutor and incredibly kind. We have been working our way through the lesson book on Zoom and is constructive and encouraging, no matter how difficult I’m finding it. I received some easy to play piano music from family at Christmas and John has been really amazing, offering to help me with the music so that I can learn things outside of the lesson book. I would recommend John as a truly fabulous piano tutor!

John is brilliant, such a patient teacher and so helpful! I am brand new to learning piano as an adult, but John made me feel at ease straight away. He has also worked hard to keep his practice covid safe and is offering online classes too whilst we can't meet in person. Would definitely recommend him!

John is a very motivating teacher - focusing on what you do well, with advice on how to play better. He's equally skilled at both classical and modern music, and how to improvise. I've made more progress than I ever thought possible. He managed to continue teaching online during COVID so I could maintain my progress.
